John, T. Jacob (University of Colorado School of Medicine, Denver), Marlene Stahl, and Vincent A. Fulginiti. Cumulative hemagglutination by Mycoplasma pneumoniae and other agglutinins. J. Bacteriol. 92:1002-1004. 1966.-The phenomenon of cumulative hemagglutination, or hemagglutination by two agglutinins, each in subagglutinating concentration, was demonstrated by use of four different systems, namely, horse serum and Mycoplasma pneumoniae, horse serum and measles antigen, M. pneumoniae and measles antigen, and parainfluenza 2 virus and M. pneumoniae. Cumulative hemagglutination appears to be the mechanism by which a horse-serum diluent causes high hemagglutination titers of M. pneumoniae, since both contain hemagglutinins against vervet erythrocytes. It was also shown that antibodies against either one of the two antigens may cause inhibition of such hemagglutination.

Antiphospholipid antibodies and Mycoplasma pneumoniae infection.
Anticardiolipin antibody levels were measured in 57 patients with Mycoplasma pneumoniae infection and 21 patients with other infections. Significantly more patients in the mycoplasma group had increased IgM and IgG anticardiolipin. Within the mycoplasma group significantly higher titres were found in patients with severe infection (assessed by need for hospital admission) and in patients with c...
متن کاملImmunoglobulin M antibody response against Mycoplasma pneumoniae lipid antigen in patients with acute pancreatitis.
Serial serum samples from patients with acute pancreatitis showed a significant increase in antibodies against methanol-chloroform-extracted lipid antigen from Mycoplasma pneumoniae when tested by complement fixation. The antibodies did not react with antigens prepared from other human mycoplasmas or from pancreatic tissue by lipid extraction. The antibodies were predominantly immunoglobulin M ...
متن کاملEnvironmental and occupational respiratory diseases – 1058. Clinical and diagnostic characteristics of mycoplasma pneumoniae pneumonia in children with lobar pneumonia
Methods We analyzed medical records of 78 children, admitted to Chungnam National University Hospital and diagnosed with lobar pneumonia by chest X-rays between March 2010 and December 2011. White blood cells, C-reactive protein (CRP), procalcitonin (PCT), specific antibodies to M. pneumoniae, and cold agglutinin (CA) were measured at admission. Children were divided into 2 groups: those with M...
متن کاملProblems of Cold Agglutinins in Cardiac Surgery: How to Manage Cardiopulmonary Bypass and Myocardial Protection
Cold agglutinins are of unique relevance in cardiac surgerybecause of the use of hypothermic cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB). Cold autoimmune diseases are defined by the presence of abnormal circulating proteins (usually IgM or IgA antibodies) that agglutinate in response to a decrease in body temperature. These disorders include cryoglobulinemia and cold hemagglutinin disease.Immunoglobulin M aut...
